CHC 14 – MIL 8
It’s strange to think any team would be desperate for a win in April. But the Cubs were absolutely desperate for one on Saturday—and they got it. A total team effort, too. The offense essentially told the bullpen “we got this,” scoring in four of nine innings, including a seven-spot in the eighth. Cole Hamels completed six and allowed two runs. The bullpen sputtered, three walks and five runs, but didn’t suffer a total meltdown. And for the first time in nine days, the Cubs stopped the bleeding. The real kicker: the Cubs have a chance to take the series this afternoon. What a change in mood that would be heading into Monday’s home opener.
Kyle Hendricks (0-1, 4.15 ERA) vs. Zach Davies (0-0, 3.60 ERA).
The Cubs and Brewers have combined for 15 home run in the first two games this series.
Mike Montgomery (2.2 IP, 5 ER, 16.88 ERA) has been placed on the injured list with a lat strain; CJ Edwards Jr. is off to Iowa with his 6 earned runs and 32.40 ERA (he’ll need two bus seats to carry all that); in two subsequent roster moves, the Cubs called up from Iowa LHP Kyle Ryan, who debuted with the Cubs Saturday night (0.2, 2 ER, 1 BB) and RHP Allen Webster.
