Yu Darvish is on the mound Wednesday in game two of the series against Pittsburgh. In two starts, Darvish (0-1, 8.10) has failed to work beyond four innings having allowed a combined six runs on seven hits in 6.2 IP—including 11 walks vs. six punchouts.
The Cubs, meanwhile, look to win back-to-back games for the first time this season, and gain ground on the Brewers, who’ve lost two-straight in Anaheim.
Joe Maddon broke the news yesterday that Jon Lester (hamstring) has officially been ruled out for his next scheduled start on Sunday against the Angels—and could possibly miss another start if placed on the 10-day injured list. It’s expected, but still unofficial, that Tyler Chatwood will make the spot-start on Sunday in Lester’s place. Another possibility, should Lester land on the IL, is for the Cubs to promote a starting pitching from the minors.
Ben Zobrist (11-for-31) is hitting .355 and is tied with Anthony Rizzo for the team lead in walks (7), but has yet to record a hit for extra bases.
Although Kris Bryant has three times as many strikeouts (12) as walks (4), half of his 10 hits have gone for extra bags (1 HR, 4 2B).
Javy Báez leads the club in hits (12), HR (4), RBI (9), and strikeouts (17).
CUBS EXTRA BASE HITS
- 5 – Bryant
- 5 – Contreras
- 4 – Báez
- 4 – Schwarber
- 3 – Rizzo, Heyward, Descalso, Zagunis
BIG LEAGUE CHEW
I have suffered a lifetime of shame and disappointment from certain friends and family members due to my extremely limited knowledge on all things Star Wars (sorry, not sorry). As a peace offering, I alert you that something called a Chewbacca will throw out a ceremonial first pitch before Wednesday night’s game. RRWWWGG (not sure I did that right either). Whatever.
