Tied Fourth; -3.5
PIT 0 – CHC 2
Jose Quintana struck out the first three batters of the game and cruised through seven scoreless innings allowing 4 hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out 11 en route to the most complete outing by a Cubs starter this season.
Joe Musgrove matched Quintana through 6.1 scoreless innings before Daniel Descalso scored Jason Heyward with an RBI single. Descalso went to second on the throw home. Victor Caratini followed with a doubled (his second of the game) against Francisco Liriano to score Descalso and give the Cubs a 2-0 lead after seven.
Steve Cishek pitched a scoreless eighth and Pedro Strop went 1-2-3 in the ninth for his first save, and the Cubs first series win.
When shortstop Erik Gonzalez dropped a shallow pop fly off Heyward’s bat in the seventh, Heyward capitalized on the miscue by hustling to second. His heads-up baserunning turned into the eventual game-winning run. It’s the little things.
Joe Maddon was ejected in the fifth by home plate umpire Mike Estabrook for arguing balls and strikes.
The game was delayed 69 minutes due to rain before the eighth inning.
Three games, two shutouts by Cubs pitching. The bullpen did not allow a run.
Despite lengthy offseason talk about the Cubs needing to add a veteran backstop behind Contreras, he and Caratini have combined to be a formidable due at the plate this season: 16-for-43 (.372), 11 R, 5 2B, 4 HR, 10 BB, 13 K, 12 RBI, .539 OBP.
Caratini was placed on the 10-day injured list on Friday with a fractured left hamate. Catcher Taylor Davis, Triple-A Iowa, will fill Caratini’s roster spot. Davis is available for Friday’s game.
For the series, the Cubs lineup drew 10 walks vs. 40 strikeouts. Way too much swing and miss.
18 – Báez

The Angels (7-6), fresh off a three-game sweep of the Brewers, and riding a six-game winning streak, come to Wrigley for a weekend series. Tyler Skaggs (1-1, 2.45) faces Cole Hamels (1-0, 5.73 ERA) Friday afternoon.

2012 – Yu Darvish makes his major league debut for the Rangers. He gives up 4 runs to the Mariners in the first inning, but the Rangers offense bails him out with four homers. Darvish pitches into the sixth to earn his first big league win, 11 – 5.
2013 – Cubs prospect Jorge Soler is ejected from a game in the Florida State League for charging the opposite dugout with a bat in the seventh inning. Soler had been spiked while sliding at second base the previous inning. He receives a five-game suspension for his actions.
2017 – After a two-hour rain delay pushes back the ceremony to raise the Cubs 2016 World Championship banner at Wrigley Field, a sellout crowd applauds Anthony Rizzo as he carries the World Series Trophy onto the field. Rizzo’s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth off Kenley Jansen drives in the winning run in a 3 – 2 win against the Dodgers.
