Bullpen Session 5.2.19

CUBS CENTRAL
(16-12)
2nd; -2.5
Streak: W W W W

CHC 11 – SEA 0
Jon Lester needed only one run on Wednesday, the offense gave him 11. Six came in the second when the Cubs sent 12 batters to the plate; Javy Báez saw two pitches in the inning: he homered and doubled.

Seattle starter, Marco Gonzales, who was aiming to become the first six-game winner this season, was bounced after 1.2 IP, the shortest start of his career, and took the loss, his first of the season.

Lester worked 7.0 shutout innings and allowed only one hit — a bloop single from Ryon Healy in the second. It was the lefty’s strongest outing this year. Allen Webster relieved Lester and pitched a clean eighth; Dillon Maples preserved the one-hitter by striking out the final three Mariners.

Lester: 7.0 IP — 0 R, 1 H — 8 BB, 1 K

The Cubs have won 13 of 17 … They’re on the cusp of giving us that intoxicating feeling of waking up and knowing they’ll win that day’s game. Not since 2016 have we had that feeling.

Anthony Rizzo has homered in 3 of his last 4 games … 10 XBH in his last 11 games.

Báez (3), Heyward (3), and Contreras (2) combined for 8 of the Cubs 10 hits.

Báez’s opposite field HR traveled an estimated 430 ft.

It’s his 10th HR of the season … six have been hit to the opposite field.
